Brazil played to a 0-0 draw against South Africa on Match Day 3 in the Olympic women’s soccer tournament.
Brazil rested many of its regular starters to begin the match, including Marta, Cristiane and Formiga.
Brazil had the first scoring chance in the 6th minute when Andressa Alves found herself with the ball in the box, but her shot was saved by South African goalkeeper Roxanne Barker.
It was the start of a lopsided first half which saw Brazil record 11 shots compared to South Africa’s one. Additionally, Brazil controlled 64 percent of the possession.
Marta came on for Brazil in the second half as Brazil continued to put pressure on South Africa’s defense.
Against the run of play South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana almost scored in the 77th minute when she sent a strike destined for the top corner of the goal. However, Brazilian goalkeeper Aline was up to the challenge and made a diving save to knock the ball out of bounds.
Neither Brazil nor South Africa could convert any of their chances the rest of the way and the match concluded 0-0.
Brazil finishes group play with seven points and wins Group E while South Africa is eliminated.
