Germany tops China 1-0 to advance to semifinals

In the second women’s quarterfinal match of the day Germany defeated China 1-0.

In the first half, the Germans controlled the match holding an advantage in both shots and possession. The team recorded nine shots compared to China’s one and held 67 percent of the possession.

Then, in the second half China went down a player after Shanshan Wang received her second yellow card and was sent off. 

With the distinct advantage, Germany put even more pressure on China’s defense and eventually found a goal in the 76th minute. 

The ball fell to Germany’s Melanie Behringer at the top of the box and she sent a thurderous strike into the back of the net.

Just a few minutes later China had its chance at equalizing as Shuang Wang drew a foul on Germany’s Leonie Maier in the box. Wang stepped up to take the penalty kick, but her shot hit off the crossbar to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Germany.

With one less player China struggled to create more scoring chances as the match ended 1-0.

Germany moves on to the semifinals where it will face the winner of Canada vs. France. China is eliminated from Olympic competition.
