Women’s Doubles Semifinals

Matsutomo/Takahashi (Japan) vs. Jung/Shin (Korea)

  • The world’s top ranked doubles duo from Japan defeated their Korean foes on Tueday morning to advance to the Women’s Doubles Gold Medal Match on Thursday night. Dealing with the hard smashes of Korea’s Shin Seung-chan throughout the match, and earning tough points on long, sustained rallies, Matsutomo and Takahashi showed why they are the world’s top ranked tandem. They won the first game 21-16 and the second game 21-15 to win 2-0 and move on to the final.

Tang/Yu (China) vs Pedersen/Rytter Juhl (Denmark)

  • 5th ranked Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl knocked off the second ranked pairing in the world, China’s Yaunting Tang and Yang Yu, 2-1 on Tuesday morning to advance to the Gold Medal match on Thursday night. The Danes won the first game 21-16, lost 21-14 in the second game, and hung on in game three after a late China rally to win 21-19. Throughout the match, the Chinese duo set up Pedersen and Rytter Juhl with easy points and, credit to the Danish duo, took full advantage. They move on to the Gold Medal Match against Japan’s Matsutomo and Takahashi.

Men’s Doubles Semifinals

Chai Biao/Hong Wei (China) vs. Goh/Tan (Malaysia)

  • The 12th ranked team in the world, Malaysia’s V Shem Goh and Wee Kiong Tan, edged the 5th ranked Chinese duo 2-1 in an extremely competitive and entertaining match. Goh and Tan got off to a great start, winning the first game 21-18, and displaying brilliant play close to the net. However, Chai Biao and Hong Wei stormed back in game two to take it 21-12. Game three was a very back-and-forth match but the nimble and clever Malaysian tandem pulled out the victory, 21-17, earning a spot in the gold medal match on Friday night.
