Germany vs. Fiji
Germany defeated Fiji 10-0 on Match Day 3 in the Olympic men’s soccer tournament. The victory was enough to earn Germany a spot in the quarterfinals as it finished second in Group C. Fiji was eliminated from Olympic competition.
The result was never in doubt as Germany’s Serge Gnabry opened the scoring for his team in the 8th minute after he scored off a cross from Julian Brandt.
Just six minutes later Brandt had his shot saved by Fiji goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau, but Niles Petersen gathered the rebound and scored to double Germany’s lead.
At the 30-minute mark Maximilian Meyer slotted his shot into the back of the net to make it 3-0.
Petersen would score two more goals for Germany to give him a first half hat trick and Gnabry capped off the half with a goal off a free kick making the score 6-0 at halftime.
Seven minutes into the second half Meyer put in two more goals for Germany to give him a hat trick, making the score 8-0.
Tamanisau did provide one bright spot for Fiji in the 58th minute when he saved a penalty kick by Meyer.
But then in the 63rd minute, Petersen scored from the penalty spot for Germany’s ninth goal of the match.
Germany scored one more goal as the match finished 10-0.
Germany’s 10-0 win was the largest margin of victory in Olympic competition since 1964.
South Korea vs. Mexico
South Korea and Mexico faced off with the top spot in Group C going to the winner. South Korea came out on top defeating Mexico 1-0.
As a result of the loss, Mexico, the defending Olympic gold medalist, is eliminated from the Olympic tournament.
With a lot on the line, both teams started off the match playing tentatively as they tried to feel each other out.
At the end of the first half, Mexico held a distinct advantage in both shots and possession, but could not convert any of its chances as the teams went into halftime tied 0-0.
Mexico’s Carlos Cisneros had two of his team’s best scoring chances midway through the second half.
In the 62nd minute, Cisneros had a shot hit off the inside of the post and bounce out. He then struck a free kick in the 70th minute that sailed just over the crossbar.
Despite not having a shot on goal for the first 75 minutes of the match, South Korea was the team to break the deadlock as Changhoon Kwon gave his side the lead with less than 15 minutes remaining.
Mexico had multiple chances to score in the final minutes, but could not convert as the match ended 1-0 in favor of South Korea.
In stoppage time, Mexico’s Hirving Lozano was given his second yellow card of the match and was sent off for shoving a South Korean player.
