Key matchups
Australia vs. France (men)
In a matchup of two teams loaded with NBA talent, Australia and France could set the tone for who the second-best team in Group A will be. Tony Parker (France) and Patty Mills (Australia) will face-off in a battle of the San Antonio Spurs point guards.
This game also features a solid matchup at the center position with France’s Rudy Gobert going against Australia’s Andrew Bogut. At this point in their careers, neither can take over offensively, but should provide their squads with excellent interior defense. Plus, Gobert has the best nicknames of the Olympics with the Stifle Tower or French Rejection, take your pick.
China vs. USA (men)
The United States begins their Olympic slate with a matchup against China. The gold medal favorites feature two returning Olympians in Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony, along with a slew of fresh faces, most notably Kyrie Irving. FULL PREVIEW
Brazil vs. Australia (women)
The host nation starts their Olympic tournament against the No. 2 ranked team in the FIBA world rankings. Even with the retirement of Australian legend Lauren Jackson, Australia remains a force in women’s basketball. Brazil, ranked No. 7 in the world, can expect a raucous home crowd hoping to cheer on their team to a big opening-game upset.
Keep an eye on Australian center Liz Cambage around the rim. She became the first woman to dunk in the Olympics in 2012.
