Gund Kwok, the first Asian Women’s Lion & Dragon Dance Troupe in the United States, was established in February 1998 to give Asian and Asian American women an opportunity to express their creativity, power, and strength through performing lion and dragon dances. Join us for a special performance at the Fields Corner Branch in celebration of the Lunar New Year and Women’s History Month! The performance will include an interactive story of the origins and significance of the lion dance, two lion dance performances, and a costume try-out at the end! No registration is required, this program is free of charge. All are welcome!

The United Nations Association of Greater Boston is celebrating International Women’s Day with a special SDG Perspective Series event focused on “Financial Security and Independence for Women Worldwide” as we delve deeper into the global and local implications of Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality. Agency over one’s financial future has the potential to transform lives and, on a large scale, contributes meaningfully towards greater gender equality. Formatted as one of UNAGB’s SDG Perspective Series events, the program will convene an expert panel to provide a variety of perspectives on the intersection of SDG 5: Gender Equality and the world of finance. Through this meaningful discussion, attendees will gain a better understanding of a multi-faceted and multi-national issue while also learning about opportunities for local action.
Nature Journaling: A Creative Exploration of the Arboretum Landscape

Bring your enthusiasm for the natural world and leave with a creative nature journal, inspired by the trees of the Arnold Arboretum. Nature journaling is all about expressing your curiosity and wonder through sketching, calligraphy, writing, or other forms of art-making. All levels are welcome: neither botanical knowledge nor previous drawing experience are required. Please bring any art supplies you have and enjoy working with Paper plus additional art supplies and tools will be provided. Weather permitting, we will spend some time outside in search of inspiration, so dress appropriately. The artmaking component of the workshop will be held indoors. This activity is led by botanist and nature art enthusiast Kristel Schoonderwoerd.
Personal Archiving 101: Organizing and Caring for Your Personal and Family Memories

Are you responsible for organizing and storing your personal or family archives, including files, photographs, scrapbooks, and 3-D objects? Led by BPL Archivist Crystal Rodgers, this workshop will cover the basics of managing and preserving historical materials, including deciding what to keep, creating an inventory of what you have, and how to care for and store these materials for the long-term. You’ll have time to ask questions during the session and will leave with some tangible next steps, including suggestions for tools and supplies as well as additional resources. Registration is required!

South Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2024

In Boston, St. Patrick’s Day is observed annually with a parade that takes place in South Boston, the city’s predominant Irish-American neighborhood. The parade has been a tradition in South Boston for more than 110 years, with the first procession taking place in 1902. It includes various marching bands, police and army contingents, costume spectacles, novelty vehicles, and a general “green” atmosphere due to participants and onlookers wearing green hats and accessories to reflect the association of the color with Irish culture.
