WHITMAN, MASS. (WHDH) - One person is dead and another critically injured after a crash between a car and a medical van on Route 14 in Whitman.

Witnesses said they heard a loud bang as a car and a wheelchair transport van collided on Auburn Street. One woman said the noise was so intense, it made her house shake.

According to officials, the crash happened just before 4 p.m.

The passenger in the Nissan, Francine Laterza, 61 of Plymouth, was taken from the scene to Brockton Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car was transported to South Shore Hospital with serious injuries. She is expected to recover from her injuries but is not being identified.

The driver of the van and the two passengers who were inside at the time of the crash were transported to Brockton Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“It was scary and very, very bad,” said witness Phyllis Ashton.

For hours, investigators collected evidence and got security video from a nearby skating rink to determine what caused the crash.

The owner of the van company said his van’s driver and one of the passengers remain hospitalized.

Reconstruction crews have been on scene to assist in determining the cause of the crash.

Officials said preliminary investigation shows the Nissan traveling east on Route 14 crossed the center line and struck the van.

The crash remains under investigation.
