WHITMAN, MASS. (WHDH) - One person is dead and another critically injured after a crash between a car and a medical van in Whitman.

Witnesses said they heard a loud bang as a car and a van transporting adults with special needs collided on Auburn Street. One woman said the noise was so intense, it made her house shake.

Rescue crews needed the Jaws of Life to free two people from the car. The passenger from the car died and the driver remains in critical condition. The van’s driver and two of its passengers were also taken to the hospital.

“It was scary and very, very bad,” said witness Phyllis Ashton.

For hours, investigators collected evidence and got security video from a nearby skating rink to determine what caused the crash.

The owner of the van company said his van’s driver and one of the passengers will remain in the hospital overnight.
