BOURNE, MASS. (WHDH) - An 18-year-old man was in court Friday, where he was arraigned on charges that he assaulted a teenage girl last week in Bourne.

On Thursday, police said an investigation led to the arrest of John Allen, who is from Buzzards Bay. Allen was charged with felony attempted kidnapping and strangulation, in addition to other lesser charges. He posted bail late Thursday.

Police said the girl had been walking to school along Puritan Road last Thursday when she was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground by Allen, who police said she did not know. Allen allegedly grabbed the girl by the neck but a witness came upon the scene and stopped the assault. The girl was not injured.

Police said Allen fled the scene when another girl who witnessed the attack screamed. Police tracked down Allen’s car and said inside, they found a hooded sweatshirt with a long black hair on it that matches the hair of the girl. Both the sweatshirt and hair were sent to the crime lab for processing.

Allen’s defense attorney John Glynn said there are multiple and conflicting descriptions of the suspect and his car. He called the allegations against his client out of character. Allen, a senior at Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, is the captain of the football team.
