BOSTON (WHDH) - The first Hispanic Boston Police officer killed in the line of duty was honored by the department Wednesday.

Officer Jose Marceira’s name was added to the BPD’s Memorial Wall of Honor during a ceremony.

Marceira, who also served in the Navy, was shot in the neck and jaw on Nov. 23, 1974 during a confrontation with a suspect in Dorchester. He was severely injured and died of the injuries he sustained in 1977. He was 33 years old when he died.

Mayor Marty Walsh spoke at the ceremony and said Marceira gave Boston “tremendous service.”
