MILTON, MASS. (WHDH) - Two people were killed when a car crashed into a tree in Milton early Friday morning.

State Police said a 2014 Mercedes Benz crashed into a tree at Bush Hill Road in Milton at 3:30 a.m. and caught on fire. Officials say they still do not know why the vehicle went off the road.

Police identified the victims as 24-year-old Nina Lewis of Dorchester, who was driving, and her boyfriend, 23-year-old Spoogie Allen of Mattapan, who was in the front seat. A passenger in the backseat, a 17-year-old boy, was transported to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries.

Andy Melhado said he ran out of his home when he heard a loud bang outside. He said he grabbed a fire extinguisher and smashed one of the car’s windows so he could pull one person out of the backseat. He was unable to rescue the two in the front.

“He was screaming for help to get out of the vehicle,” the neighbor said of the backseat passenger. “I feel regret I wasn’t able to get the other two out. I did the best I could but the flames were just too high, the vehicle began to explode.”

Regina Lewis, Nina Lewis’s mother, visited Melhado at his house to thank him for trying to save her daughter.

“I heard he did a lot of work to save her,” said Regina Lewis.

Family members said Lewis, who leaves behind three children, and Allen were out celebrating her birthday. She had just turned 24 on Thursday.
