He had been battling deep depression and the beginning stages of Parkinson’s Disease.
The bench in Boston’s Public Garden where he filmed his award-winning role in “Good Will Hunting” became a gathering spot for local fans.

Joan Rivers Dies in Surgery

A few weeks later, it was comedian Joan Rivers.
The 81-year-old died during surgery. Her doctor remains under investigation.

Tracy Morgan Injured In Car Crash

It was a close call for Tracy Morgan when a crash with a truck left a friend dead and the comedian hospitalized for weeks.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin Split

Gwyneth Paltrow and Cold Play’s Chris Martin were the big break up of the year. The duo announced they were “consciously uncoupling”.

Celebrity Weddings

But wedding bells rang this year as some big names got hitched; Kim and Kanye, Brad and Angelina, and George Clooney and Alma Alamuddin.

The summer also saw millions taking the plunge on the internet.
The Ice Bucket Challenge went viral, all started by a local – Pete Frates.
The challenge raised more than $100 million to find a cure for ALS.

Also, an online hit was the most retweeted photo ever, taken at this year’s Oscars: Ellen DeGeneres’s selfie with everyone from Meryl Streep to Bradley Cooper.

Frozen Keeps Singing

But Idina Menzel just let it go as “Frozen” made millions at the box office.

Pharell’s Hat Goes Viral

At the Grammy’s, it was all about head gear.        
By the end of the awards, Pharrell Williams‘ hat had its own Twitter handle.
The producer/singer had a new place to throw it too: he and Gwen Stefani joined “The Voice” as judges.

Big changes in late night, too, as Jimmy Fallon took over for Jay Leno on ‘The Tonight Show,’ making room for New Hampshire’s Seth Meyers on ‘Late Night.’
