CARVER, MASS. (WHDH) - A Fall River man has been held without bail in connection with a reported kidnapping.

Matthew Devaney, 29, was arraigned in Wareham District Court Friday on one count each of assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping and animal cruelty.

He was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.

On June 3, Carver police responded to a home for a well-being check after a call for a woman being held against her will.

Police found no one at the home, but did locate two dogs in the basement. One of the dogs appeared to be thin and lethargic.

Police were able to contact the victim, who told them she was being held against her will in a red Toyota Camry.

Around 4:15 p.m., New Bedford Police spotted the car and pulled him over. Devaney ran away a short distance before he was caught by police.

The criminal complaints allege Devaney beat, threatened and kept the victim against her will. The victim said she saw Devaney beat her dog on several occasions.
