QUINCY (WHDH) – Twenty-five stranded sea turtles have been rescued from the chilly waters of Cape Cod.

The turtles are being treated at the New England Aquarium’s Turtle Hospital in Quincy. Experts there say with temperatures dipping, turtles washed up over several days.

The rescued turtles will be slowly rewarmed over several days and will be treated for other life-threatening illnesses.

The Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary says on its Facebook page rescuers found the sea turtles on Eastham and Wellfleet beaches this past week.

The turtles are eventually transported and released into warmer waters in the south by other organizations.

Mass Audubon says it has rescued 54 cold-stunned turtles this season. It rescued 600 last year.
