WORCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) – One person has died and two people were rushed to the hospital after a fire ripped through a house in Worcester.

Fire officials were called to the split-level home on Green Farm Road around 7 a.m. Monday.

Authorities say the fire was raging through the upstairs bedrooms. They say an 85-year-old woman, along with her son and his husband, both in their 60s, were in the home.

Deputy Fire Chief John Sullivan said a fire lieutenant who lives in the neighborhood saw the fire on his way to work and tried to help the people out of the home. He was able to rescue one of the men. Crews went into the home and found the other man and the elderly woman.

The three were taken University of Massachusetts Medical Center. The woman succumbed to injuries at the hospital, according to Deputy Chief Sullivan.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
