MIDDLEBORO, MASS. (WHDH) - A fatal crash involving a wrong-way driver on Interstate-495 Northbound in Middleboro killed five people Sunday night, some of whom officials say were young adults.

A single driver drove southbound  in a northbound lane, north of Exit 3 on I-495.

The wrong-way driver crashed into a vehicle carrying four passengers, causing it to catch on fire.

Massachusetts State Police Officer Anthony Thomas said cause of the crash is under investigation, as well as the identities of those who were killed.

Barnstable High School confirmed to 7News that two of the victims were 2015 graduates of Barnstable High School, and three of the victims were related.

Thomas said the vehicle traveling northbound carrying four had no time to dodge the wrong-way vehicle driving toward them.

“We extend condolences to family of the young people that lost lives last night in this terrible crash,” Thomas said in a press conference held shortly after 9 a.m. Monday morning.

Thomas said access points to the highway are clearly marked, and they are unclear what may have caused operator to travel south in a northbound lane.

The crash is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police and crime scene investigators.
