MEXICO CITY (AP) — Seven children are dead following a house fire in a poor Mexico City neighborhood.

The city prosecutors’ office said Friday the children died in a pre-dawn blaze in a wooden house in the Iztapalapa neighborhood.

The office said the five of the children were under 10, including two 2-year-olds. The other two were 13 and 14.

The city prosecutor said the children were apparently left at home alone while their parents worked.

While the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, house fires in the city are often caused by attempts to heat dwellings using wood or charcoal fires, or faulty gas connections.
