STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (WHDH) — A driver was arrested for DUI in New York City after police said he crashed through a fence and into a homeowner’s pool on Staten Island.

Louis Mester said the crash woke up him and his family and he compared the sound to an explosion. Police said the car knocked over all but one of the posts supporting their back deck and then crushed a section of their pool..

“We could’ve been in the pool,” said Mester. “We were in the pool earlier and you never know.”

The driver, Michael Spallieri, allegedly climbed out of the car and neighbors said he reeked of alcohol. He allegedly offered to pay for the damage and begged Mester not to call police but he did.

Spallieri was charged with DUI and actually returned to Mester’s house to apologize. He told reporters that he does not know if he was intoxicated during the crash.

Mester said he plans on getting a guardrail approved to prevent future car crashes into his yard.
