UNDATED (WHDH) — A new government study found that Americans get almost as many empty calories from alcohol as they do from soft drinks.

Soda, the focus of obesity fighting health campaigns, is the source of about 6 percent of the calories adults consume.

Alcoholic beverages account for about 5 percent.

The study interviewed more than 11,000 Americans over three years.
