British Astronaut Tim Peake recently shared his breathtaking view of the aurora borealis – the Northern Lights – from space.

Peake took the photo while on board the International Space Station and posted it on his Facebook Page last week.

The light display occurs when a burst of the sun’s gas and magnetic field causes a solar wind, which hits the Earth’s atmosphere and creates the incredible sight.

Peake called his view of the aurora "magical."
