BOSTON (WHDH) - City Councilors Matt O’Malley and Michelle Wu proposed a bill on Monday that would not allow plastic bags at grocery stores.

The lawmakers said that the bags are harmful to the environment, clogging storm drains and littering the city.

Part of the bill would let stores charge five cents for paper or reusable bags, and could slap a fine on stores that do not cooperate.

Wu is a councilor at large and O’Malley represents West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain.

The City Council will discuss the bill on Wednesday.
