Boston Police have stepped up to help a dog who was injured during a shooting in Dorchester early Thursday morning.

The dog’s owner said a police sergeant is picking up the bill.

It’s an act of kindness Ricky Weaks never expected and will certainly never forget.

Around 1 a.m. Thursday, Weaks and his dog Felon were caught in the line of fire when bullets started flying along McClellan Street in Dorchester.

Dashayaa Mizhari, 18, is in critical condition after she was shot multiple times while on her way home from a friend’s house.

Her neighbor’s dog was hit in the leg.

Police said the dog put himself in front of Weaks and took a bullet for him.

Weaks could not afford the medical treatment his dog needed, so two Boston Police officers and a sergeant stepped in and split the costs.

Weaks said he is grateful for the officers’ help.
