YARMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — The annual Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade will honor a Yarmouth police officer who was killed last year in the line of duty.

The March 9 parade in Yarmouth will honor Sgt. Sean Gannon, who was shot while he and other officers were serving an arrest warrant at a Barnstable home in April. Gannon’s K-9, Nero, who was injured in the shooting but survived, will also be honored.

MassLive.com reports that Parade Committee Chairman Desmond Keogh said the focus of this year’s parade is to “offer the community an opportunity to heal.”

Organizers say Gannon and Nero regularly participated in the parade.

The grand marshal will be Yarmouth Police K-9 officer Peter McClelland, who trained Nero and was with him through his recovery.
