EAST HAMPTON, Conn. (AP) — State police say an SUV has struck and seriously injured an officer helping a utility crew responding to a power outage.

Authorities say Officer Hardie Marion Burgin was struck at around 8:15 p.m. Sunday at an intersection in East Hampton.

They say the 30-year-old officer was in the road helping an Eversource line crew when an SUV hit him.

The officer was taken to Hartford Hospital with injuries suspected to be serious.

The 30-year-old driver from Portland, Connecticut, was wearing his seat belt and wasn’t injured.

It wasn’t immediately clear what might have caused the crash or whether charges would be filed.
