A woman was hospitalized after police said her car was struck by a Commuter Rail train in Belmont Friday morning.

The crash happened on Brighton and Hittinger streets in the area known as Hills Crossing. Police said the woman driving the SUV managed to get two children out of the car before it was struck by the train. The 58-year-old woman was then struck by her own car. A third child was still in the car but was not injured.

A crossing bar could be seen laying on top of the SUV that was struck. Police said it is unknown how the car ended up stuck on the tracks and it is under investigation.

MBTA employees said the warning lights were working properly at the time of the crash.

The woman was taken to Beth Israel Hospital with serious injuries.
