QUINCY, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts city is accepting get-well letters for a sky-diving Santa who was injured while parachuting from a plane as part of an annual tradition known as the Santa Jump.

Barry Welch, director of Quincy’s Recreation Department, tells the Boston Globe that two Quincy residents came up with the idea to write letters to the Santa, who’s also known as Mike Burns.

Burns broke his leg on Saturday after he and three elves jumped off the plane at Pageant Field. A crowd of 800 to 1,200 children and parents were in attendance.

Burns was hospitalized while a backup Santa posed for photographs with families. A hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday that he’s in good condition.

The cards will be collected up until Christmas.

The Santa Jump is a 40-year tradition.
