A man has been charged in connection with an chemical attack on a woman he allegedly wanted to marry. 

On Friday, Jan. 8,New Haven Police reported to a Spring Street home to investigate an assault. 

The victim was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital. 

According to police, there were visible injuries to her face, neck, chest and arms. Her skin was discolored and peeling. 

Officers recovered a chemical in a plastic cup. 

The victim told police the man who had allegedly attacked her is her upstairs neighbor. She said the two had dated in the past but are no longer dating and she currently has an active restraining order against him. The victim said the man attacked her by throwing a caustic chemical at her after she told him she would not marry him. 

The chemical caused third degree burns. 

Derek Lee Rawls, 49, turned himself in to police on Wednesday.He is charged with first degree assault, criminal attempt to commit assault, reckless endangerment, breach of peace and violating a protective order. 

He was held on $500,000 bond and will likely be arraigned on Thursday.
