A couple was arrested Tuesday night in Methuen after a police chase across two states ended in a crash.

Police said an off-duty officer noticed the driver in the was a suspect wanted on several charges. A marked cruiser followed the driver, Chad Tombarello, after he failed to stop and Tombarello allegedly led police on a chase.

Police said the chase went against traffic at points before Tombarello headed into New Hampshire, where New Hampshire State Police joined in the pursuit. Tombarello then allegedly drove back into Massachusetts, where police said he crashed into a New Hampshire State Police cruiser in Methuen. Police said he and his passenger, Natasha Johnson, fled on foot.

Police said Tombarello was apprehended after attacking an elderly woman while trying to get away. Johnson was arrested near the scene.

When the suspect appears in Lowell District Court he will face charges relating to the police chase, as well as his outstanding warrants.

According to police, the suspect’s girlfriend faces a charge relating to actions of disturbing the peace after the pursuit was over.
