BEVERLY, MASS. (WHDH) - One person was killed in a large fire in Beverly Thursday morning.

The fast-moving fire burned at a home on Highland Terrace just before 7 a.m.

Clark Young, 78, was not able to escape the building and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers went into the burning house and rescued several elderly residents but were unable to reach Young.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the building.

According to the State Fire Marshal, the District Attorney’s office also responded to the fire. An investigation into the fire is ongoing.

Neighbors said Young worked for the post office for 30 years and just retired last fall as a city parking attendant. His son is a trooper with the State Police.
