BOSTON (WHDH) - A group of Jimmy Fund patients got an exciting surprise at Friday night’s game.
Red Sox fan Carlie Gonzalez and her friends were taking a group photo when they realized they were photo-bombed by David Ortiz.
Ortiz was seen walking by when he spotted the group and decided he wanted part of the action.
He removed his helmet, leaned in and smiled for the camera.
“We were all getting the picture and all of a sudden the crowd started screaming,” Gonzalez said. “We all turned around and there he was. It was kind of crazy.”
These were no ordinary fans.
The five people smiling near the dugout are patients at Dana Farber.
“I was in isolation for almost a year,” said patient Becca Hudson, or Provincetown.
“I had eight months of chemo and in January I had surgery to remove my clavicle,” Gonzalez said.
The Jimmy Fund took them to a Sox game as part of a weekend on the town.
In the moment when Big Papi stopped to photo-bomb the picture, it made all the doctor’s visits and hospital stays, all the chemotherapy and radiation, go away.
“Kind of a good thing to come out of a not-too-good situation,” Gonzalez said.
The teens’s parents are forever grateful.
“It takes such a difficult situation she’s been through to put a smile on her face,” Gonzalez’s mother, Julie, said.
“It made me feel completely normal,” Gonzalez said. “Just doing fun things with all the people I love and met this
year.”
