BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey is leading a coalition of 12 fellow Democratic attorneys general in opposing a rule change proposed by the U.S. Department of Labor that they say would let young people operate power-driven patient lifts without training or supervision.
Healey said Tuesday the change would endanger the health and safety of young workers and residents in health care facilities.
Healey said the labor department currently lets 16- and 17-year-old workers operate the power-driven patient lifts — used in nursing homes, residential facilities, and hospitals — but only after they have been trained and only under the supervision of an adult caregiver.
Healey was joined by the attorneys general of California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia.
