CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — More than two dozen events over 12 days are planned to mark the anniversary of the South Carolina church shootings in which nine parishioners were shot and killed during a Bible study at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

The events include a community memorial service at a local sports arena on Friday, June 17, the anniversary of the shootings.

The following day there will be a unity walk passing in front of the historic black church and ending on the grounds of Charleston’s new performing arts center.

Doves will be released following a short ceremony and a tree will be dedicated in memory of the nine shooting victims.

A white man, Dylann Roof, faces both state and federal charges. Both state and federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
