A former Massachusetts fire chief was arrested and charged with arson in Maine.

The court documents say Ricky Plummer told and investigator he accidentally set a brush fire in Old Orchard last month, by carelessly throwing out a cigarette.

Police said Plummer, 59, started a fire that burned through nearly 40 acres of woods in southern Maine. The fire took more than 100 firefighters to put it out and came dangerously close to a condo complex.

He was arrested over the weekend.

Plummer’s bail was set at $10,000. He is no longer with the fire department and the town has put him on administrative leave.

Plummer served as chief of the Marlboro and Yarmouth fire departments in Massachusetts. He was most recently the fire chief in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
