Disgraced former FBI agent John Connolly will likely spend the rest of his life in prison after the Florida Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal in connection his handling of former Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger.

The court declined to hear Connolly’s appeal of his 2002 conviction of helping Bulger avoid police by tipping them off about investigations. Connolly, 75, spent 10 years in prison on that case.

When he finished that sentence, Connolly was convicted of killing the president of a Florida gambling operation. For that, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Connolly mounted several appeals in the murder case.

Legal experts say Connolly’s latest appeal was his last hope.
