BOSTON (WHDH) - A reception was held Monday to celebrate a key discovery in the fight against ALS, made possible by the Ice Bucket Challenge.

It’s the second straight summer of the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” a viral social media campaign that raised awareness for ALS. The cause went viral in the summer of 2014.

Former Boston College baseball pitcher Pete Frates started the campaign and doctors said it funded a clinical breakthrough. A key gene was discovered, helping scientists who are researching a cure.

Strega Waterfront hosted the Frates family on Monday night to celebrate the breakthrough. The family said they are excited to see what the future holds.

All proceeds from Monday’s reception went directly to the Frates Foundation.
