ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (WHDH) — A 5-year-old girl with cancer was honored by the women’s soccer team at the University of New Mexico, who made their new friend their unofficial captain.

Emma Davis has been battling leukemia since January. She met some members of the soccer team when they were volunteering with “Love Your Melon.” The college organization provides hats and beanies to children with cancer. Emma quickly became friends with the soccer team and her mother said she is happy to see her daughter having fun again.

“There’s really no words, as a parent, to see your child be a child and not sick in bed with tubes and medicines and toxins being pumped into her,” said Anne Davis.

Team captain Alexa Cabrales said she is happy to share her title with Emma and said seeing her on the sidelines inspires her and her teammates to push a little harder.
