The Salt Lake City School District came under fire after it apparently failed to notify parents about a lack of funds on lunch money accounts.

Sophia Isom, a fifth grader, claimed her lunch was taken away and thrown out after a district nutrition manager who was monitoring accounts said she didn’t have any funds.

The district said that it had started notifying parents about negative account balances on Monday, but Sophia’s mother said that she wasn’t identified.

“Even if they did try to send the word out, you still don’t do that to a child. You don’t take a lunch out of their hands,” she said.
