STONEHAM, Mass. (WHDH) — Heartbreak from the godfather of 26-year-old Joseph Puopolo who says the army ranger was shot overnight inside his friend's house in Stoneham.

“Joseph was a hero in the United States Army. He served in Afghanistan, he just came home from Afghanistan and now this had to happen,” said Joseph Alessandro, victim’s godfather.

Puopolo who just returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan and celebrated his birthday a few days ago, was pronounced dead at the hospital. His friend also shot, remains hospitalized. That victim lives with his mother and stepfather who's a Medford Police officer.

Overnight three suspects were arrested in connection with the double shooting including one suspect who was arraigned on a drug charge in Somerville district court.

“He’s got no convictions on his record and the bail was set at $10,000 cash, which is really something to do with the murder charge, which I’m not part of,” said Libby Fulgione, suspect’s attorney.

Through the day investigators came and went from the crime scene. The district attorney said it doesn’t appear to be random but that didn't lessen the pain for Joseph Puopolo's godfather.

“He was Special Forces. Special Forces, he was in the front lines. Strong, never stood back,” Alessandro said.
