BOSTON (AP) — The highest court in Massachusetts has upheld a lower court decision that granted a new trial to a man convicted in the 1993 killing of a Boston police officer.
Sean Ellis was sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted in 1995 of the shooting death of Officer John Mulligan. Mulligan was shot five times in the face in the early morning Sept. 26, 1993 as he slept in his car while on a security detail outside a pharmacy.
The Supreme Judicial Court on Friday agreed with a Superior Court judge that ruled Ellis didn’t get a fair trial because two detectives who played key roles in the investigation later pleaded guilty to corruption charges. It also found that prosecutors didn’t provide Ellis’ defense team with all the evidence.
