MEDFORD, MASS. (WHDH) - A highway worker was struck and killed while working in a construction zone around 3 a.m. Tuesday.
It happened on I-93 Northbound near exit 33 in Medford.
According to police, Thomas O’Day, 52 of East Bridgewater, was picking up cones after he and his crew from Highway Safety Systems painted lines on the highway when a 31-year-old man driving a Fiat collided with the crew.
State Police believe the driver was drunk.
MassDOT says the work zone safety setup, complete with safety cones and warning signs, was in place when the worker was hit.
A second worker, a 33-year-old Taunton man, was at the back of a company truck when it was also hit. He was injured but is expected to be OK.
State Police charged the driver with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of liquor.
This is the second time in as many days that a highway worker has been hit by and allegedly impaired driver.
On Monday another man was charged with OUI after he reportedly hit a MassDOT worker just outside the Ted William tunnel.
State Police are investigating the incident.
