HINGHAM, MASS. (WHDH) - A Hingham family had the incredible opportunity to pass along a present for the Pope.

The couple was in Rome visiting the Vatican. When the couple told their daughter about the trip, she was determined to make it extra special.

Megan Naughton, 9, loves making potholders in her spare time.

She decided to make one for her parents, Maura and Lawrence, to take with them to Rome. The pair were going on a religious pilgrimage.

They went with a group to see Pope Francis at his weekly public gatherings, which normally draw crowds into the thousands.

The couple were in a line about 5 feet deep behind another line of people who were close enough to shake hands with the Pope.

Maura and Lawrence made friends with an Italian couple standing next to them and told them about the potholder.

The couple was able to hand it off to the Pope.

“I was like ‘omg’ I was really excited” said Megan.

According to Megan’s grandmother, Maura cried—absolutely amazed that along with gold chalices and other expensive items, the Pope took the time to hold up Megan’s special gift.

To top it all off–it all happened on Maura’s birthday.

The Hingham family is hoping Pope Francis puts the potholder to good use.

The couple will return from Rome on Monday.
