Human remains have been found in a pile of dirt at a National Grid dig site in Everett.

The discovery was made Thursday at around 11 a.m. A cadaver dog hit on the site and a forensic anthropologist then confirmed the findings. A skull was found at first and now Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said what appears to be the remainder of a human body has been found.

Officials said the remains appear to be female and have been exposed to the elements for at least a year. Police brought in a command post and investigators will begin to dig for more evidence.

Ryan said personal items were found with the remains but they are still assessing what they have. The remains have been brought to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the person’s identity, along with age, race and possible cause of death.
