(NBC) — A massive fish kill was discovered on a stretch of Long Island Monday morning.
Tens of thousands of dead bunker fish were seen floating in the waters of the Shinnecock Canal near Hampton Bays.
Many of the fish also washed ashore and into marinas, carpeting the surface areas.
The fish die-off is being investigated by environmentalists.
Officials say the population of bunker fish are up this year and they are often subject to extensive die-offs on Long Island during the fall months.
