WALTHAM, Mass. (WHDH) — Longtime Red Sox broadcaster, Jerry Remy, released a statement Saturday in response to the arrest of his son, Jared Remy. Jared is accused of stabbing his girlfriend Jennifer Martel to death at their Waltham apartment.

A day after Jared Remy was charged with the death of his girlfriend Jennifer Martel his famous father, Jerry Remy, put out a powerful message.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to Jenn Martel and her family. Words cannot describe my wife's and my grief. Son or not, I am at a loss for words articulating my disgust and remorse over this senseless and tragic act. We are heartbroken,” Jerry Remy said.

The longtime voice of the Red Sox posted the statement on Twitter where it reached hundreds of thousands of his followers.

“Must be a terrible horrible thing to go through but powerful for him to find the ability to express that kind of distance from his son,” said Chip Koty who supports Jerry’s message.

The Remy family was noticeably absent from the courtroom when Jared faced a judge on Friday. Prosecutors said he repeatedly stabbed Jennifer Martel in their Waltham townhouse while the couple's four-year-old daughter was inside.

“She seemed quiet. He seemed like he was running the show,” said Becky Ferrari, Jared Remy's neighbor.

A neighbor described Remy as intimidating, while Martel's close friend said the relationship was troubled.

“She has had an issue for quite some time with him controlling her and controlling her life,” Kristina Hill, Martel’s best friend.

Two days before Martel's death, Remy was arrested for assault. Martel told investigators he had grabbed her by the head and neck and slammed her into a mirror.

“Mr. Remy was released on Wednesday, with a bail warning and no abuse order,” Middlesex district attorney, Marion Ryan.
