BURLINGTON, MASS. (WHDH) - The head varsity football coach at Burlington High School was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior.

According to school officials, they received allegations this week of verbal misconduct toward players by the coach.

A meeting was held with Coach Shawn Maguire to inform him of the allegations and he was then placed on leave.

“I understand that there may be many questions, and I want to thank our community members for their patience and support while this investigation is underway,” Superintendent Dr. Eric Conti said. “The Burlington Public Schools is a safe and welcoming educational community, and we take any allegations of inappropriate verbal actions or behavior seriously.”

Parents are defending Maguire, with some protesting outside the high school Wednesday. Parents and students told 7News Maguire is a good man and the allegations may have been exaggerated.

“He’s a good coach, my son has been with him for several years,” said Jessenia Otavo, whose son is one of the captains of the team. “He’s tough but that’s what they need to win.”

“He just wanted the best out of his players and he wanted them to perform to the best of their abilities,” said student Keon O’Regan.

An investigation is ongoing.

Statement from Dale Marie Merrill, attorney for Shawn Maguire:

“We have not been provided with any specifics about the allegations and we are confident that once the school looks into the matter, it will be clear Mr. Maguire has not done anything wrong. Coach Maguire is a good man, who is a well-respected member of the community.”
