NEWTON, MASS. (WHDH) - An 80-year-old driver who drove the wrong way on the Mass Pike Monday will be cited.

The car struck a median barrier on the Mass Pike after police said the driver went the wrong way on the highway Monday afternoon.

Officials said the driver, a Westwood man, entered the Mass Pike at exit 19 by the Allston/Brighton tolls. The silver sedan drove westbound in the eastbound lane. Police said the man traveled for 3 miles before hitting the barrier next exit 17.

The car was towed away and the driver was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton. Investigators believe he had a medical emergency.

Three other vehicles were involved in a crash trying to avoid the driver facing the wrong way near exit 17. Police said no one else was injured.

The man will be cited for negligent operation of a motor vehicle, wrong way operation and marked lanes violation.

He was not arrested and so is not being charged at this time.
