HAVERHILL, MASS. (WHDH) - A man drowned in a river Wednesday after two people tried to rescue him.

Haverhill police and firefighters responded to a reported man in the Merrimack River around 8 p.m. Wednesday night.

Firefighters found Trent Cook, 47 of Haverhill, in the water.

He was transported to Holy Family Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Two other people, a man and a woman, were pulled from the river and transported to the hospital as a precaution.

The woman was a friend of Cook’s and jumped into the river in an effort to save him.

The man, who was fishing nearby, heard shouting and jumped in to also try to save him.

Officials said it appears this was an accidental drowning and no foul play is suspected.
