SANDWICH, MASS. (WHDH) - The long holiday weekend has been cut short for some as Hermine puts a damper on vacation plans to Cape Cod and the islands.

People packed the Steamship Authority and a car ferry as the boats made several trips back and forth from Nantucket to Hyannis on Sunday.

The Steamship Authority was the only ferry company in the area continuing service into the evening.

The Hy-Line ferry is going “trip to trip” throughout the day, deciding if the seas will be safe enough.

The Island Queen has canceled all of its sailings until at least Tuesday.

The Steamship Authority is also going trip-to-trip for its service to Martha’s Vineyard and has canceled its service to Nantucket.

While it was sunny for most of Sunday, visitors said you could feel the effects of Hermine on the water.

The Steamship Authority will have service to Nantucket on a trip-by-trip basis and has diverted all trips from Oak Bluffs to Vineyard Haven.
