WATERTOWN, MASS. (WHDH) - Officials are investigating after a parked car burst into flames in Watertown Friday morning.

Bright flames lit up the night and the sound of explosions woke people out of their sleep on Phillips Street.

It was the neighbor’s garage going up in flames, with two cars inside. One of those cars belongs to Eric Schroeder.

“There was sounds like almost like gunfire, I think it was the tires exploding that woke us up,” he said. “When I opened our bedroom door I could see both cars were on fire, so we grabbed our dog and tried to grab our cats and headed out the front door.”

A neighbor shot video as the flames got bigger and threatened to spread to one or more houses. According to firefighters, the stucco finish on the house may have helped them keep the fire from spreading.

Days later, the burnt out cars remind residents they still don’t know what started the fire. Many assumed it was some kind of malfunction in one of the cars, but according to sources it looks like the fire may have started outside the structure.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire and whether it was intentionally set.
