BOSTON (WHDH) - The process for appointing constables is now under review.

This comes after police said Kirk Figueroa opened fire on two Boston Police officers in East Boston last week.

Figueroa was appointed constable in April.

Mayor Marty Walsh is concerned councilors were not informed of Figueroa’s criminal history outside of Massachusetts before approving his application.

“As this case unfolds there seems to be some issues there,” Walsh said. “There could only be a Massachusetts background check and if there was a nation-wide check we
could have seen some things there.”

Constables oversee evictions, make sure court papers are delivered and take people into custody.
